ABSTRACT Anaerobic treatment of sulfur-rich wastewater is challenging because sulfide greatly inhibits the activity anaerobic microorganisms, especially methanogenic archaea. We developed an internal phase-separated reactor (IPSR) that removed prior to methanogenesis by gas stripping using biogas produced in reactor. The IPSR was fed with synthetic containing a very high concentration up 6,000 mg S L−1 chemical oxygen demand (COD) 30,000 L−1. operated at organic loading rate 5–12 kg COD m−3 day−1 35 °C. results show reduced from influent <700 first-stage effluent. second-stage effluent contained <400 As result effective removal its function, had efficiency >90% over entire experimental period. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed major archaea were Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta, which are frequently found high-rate reactors. Thus, maintains these microorganisms achieves high-process performance even when concentrations.
