Biological soil crusts (BSCs) play an essential role in stabilization and nutrient cycling arid environments, being a hotspot of microbial activity including enzyme production. However, the changes that BSCs undergo during ecological succession dune are poorly understood. In over 60-year revegetation chronosequence (2021, 2016, 1973, 1962) southeastern Tengger Desert, China, we compared development underlying sands using metagenome sequencing assays. both sand substrate, increased but was greater for than emphasizing potential activity. A clear trend community composition co-occurrence network complexity observed BSCs: family-level taxonomic became more connected succession, while there no such trend. Unexpectedly, considering their low relative abundance diversity, archaea emerged as major keystones establishing networks, key to stability. by contrast, did not this role. During BSC dominant archaeal groups were Nitrososphaeria, Methanomicrobia, Halobacteria, unclassified Thaumarchaeota, mainly linked functional genes related carbon nitrogen, CHB2, xylA, amyA, amoB, nxrA, nxrB, nirB. This suggests BSCs, relates nitrogen cycling. perspective adds emerging view structure function environments.
