Glacial meltwater contributions to streams depend on watershed characteristics that impact water quantity and quality, with potential changes as glaciers continue recede. The purpose of our study was investigate the influence glacier bedrock controls chemistry in glacial streams, focusing a range small large watersheds Alaska. Southcentral Alaska provides an ideal area due diverse geologic varying amounts coverage across watersheds. To spatial temporal variability type, we analyzed samples ( n = 343) from seven over 2 years for major trace element concentrations stable isotopes. We found variable rivers related relative amount metamorphic, sedimentary, igneous bedrock. Some sites had elevated harmful elements like As U melt or groundwater. Longitudinal (upstream downstream) apparent within each river, increasing inputs tributaries, groundwater altering contributions. isotopic composition river compared endmember sources suggested glacier-dominated groundwater-dominated along stream transects. For example, Knik Matanuska (with contributing glaciers) more influenced by meltwater, while Little Susitna River Across all rivers, controlled near headwaters downstream, reflecting type.
