Microplastics (MPs) have become a critical pollutant, accumulating in aquatic ecosystems and posing significant environmental human health risks. Approximately 5.25 trillion plastic particles float global oceans, releasing up to 23,600 metric tonnes of dissolved organic carbon annually, which disrupts microbial dynamics. MPs arise from the breakdown larger plastics, degraded by photodegradation, thermal degradation, biological processes, are influenced polymer type factors. As carriers, absorb transport contaminants such as heavy metals, per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent pollutants (POPs) across trophic levels, thereby increasing toxicity within food webs. Key organisms, including microalgae, molluscs, fish, experience cellular toxicity, oxidative stress, disruptions essential functions due MP ingestion or adhesion, raising concerns about their bioaccumulation humans through ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact. The complex surface chemistry enhances pollutant adsorption, process modulated pH, salinity, contamination while aging structural attributes further impact bioavailability toxicity. This review consolidates knowledge on MPs' occurrence, transformation, interactions, methodologies for sampling analysis, emphasizing advancements spectroscopy imaging techniques improve detection environments. These insights underscore pressing need standardized analytical protocols comprehensive toxicological research fully understand effects health, informing future mitigation strategies policy development.
