Fresh groundwaters (<250 mg l −1 Cl) in the Chalk of East Anglia have a range chloride concentrations that are higher than 10–20 level is conventionally expected from evaporative concentration rainfall chloride, with median 46 being observed. This also typical other English aquifers (i.e. 20–30 ). Three possible explanations explored: increased region very low effective rainfall, agricultural inputs, and effects old saline water known to be present at depth. Saline intrusion discounted as significant cause. Nitrate potassium indicators impact, associated latter, but neither an entirely satisfactory indicator. De-nitrification possibly widespread. The three processes considered not mutually exclusive none decisively eliminated balance evidence favours influence depth, which diffusing up into active aquifer. There clearly some observations affected by input for effect weak.
