Vegetation greening resulting from ecological engineering efforts has statistically contributed to environmental improvement, through enhancing ecosystem effectiveness remains a challenge. Nevertheless, there been notable lack of research dedicated vegetation resilience and restoration potential by mitigating browning in watersheds within arid semi-arid regions. This study fills that gap identifying the spatial heterogeneity using statistical analyses an exponential decay approach. It then evaluates for optimizing structures areas based on reference state. The key findings included following: (1) With narrower interquartile range, kNDVI values 2015 2023 demonstrated increases as compared 2000–2014. northern eastern sub-watersheds showed greater restoration, but southern regions less resilience. (2) majority was concentrated at moderate levels, number grids with strong positive tendencies decreased, according analysis grid trends. (3) Fifteen states were established current natural conditions. larger ratio differences sub-watershed indicating opportunities improvement. Extreme degradation little resource-poor areas. provides valuable insights into integrating practices, advancing application strategies.
