Abstract Mussel biofouling increases energy losses in hydraulic structures. The first contribution of this paper is the quantification mussel‐induced equivalent sand roughness k s as function mussel attachment density N and shell length L . Laboratory experiments reveal that /L ≈ 1.5 for a continuous regular layer mussels, which found 2 > 1.2. For 0.5 < 1.2, mussels form irregular with increased values up to 2.4. These geometrical irregularities are interpreted macro‐roughness elements, is, elements spatial scale larger than an individual mussel. 0.5, too low act leading 1.5. second establishment threshold criterion importance filtering activity on based data from here reported literature other configurations and/or species. An application example illustrates how thus obtained can be used 1‐D model quantifying additional water transfer projects.
