In order to improve the corrosion resistance of micro‐arc oxidation (MAO) ceramic layer AZ31 magnesium alloy, a hydrophobic Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating was prepared on its surface by one‐step hydrothermal method. The microstructure characterized scanning electron microscope, energy disperse spectroscopy, X‐ray diffractometer, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. wettability were studied contact angle (CA) measuring instrument electrochemical workstation. Meanwhile, durability evaluated sandpaper abrasion, tape peeling immersion test. results showed that LDH can be successfully MAO treatment with alkaline aluminum nitrate solution containing sodium laurate. sealed inherent defects coating, resulting in significantly improved resistance. With extension abrasion distance, times, time, CA shows downward trend, gradually changed from hydrophilic. However, after test, still has good resistance, current density lower than layer.

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys possess many outstanding properties, showing great potential to be extensively applied in different fields. Unfortunately, they are highly susceptible corrosion, especially corrosive chloride ions. This causes huge economic loss has restricted their applications industry. Among strategies, protective coatings/surface modifications attract considerable attention because can reduce or even restrain corrosion by preventing contact with the external environment. review focuses on recent advances various coating/surface modification technologies pertinent Mg offer a clear picture for researchers engineers relevant research area. The topics covered include anodic oxidation, plasma electrolytic chemical conversion coating, sol-gel laser cladding, cold spray, electrophoretic deposited layered double hydroxide coating superhydrophobic coating. In addition, industrial of electrochemical (anodic oxidation oxidation) coatings briefly presented. existing issues future perspectives discussed accelerate broad alloys.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are well known and broadly investigated on bare aluminum alloys, but not PEO treated where source of ions is restricted. The additions the chelating agents were tested in this work to stimulate LDH formation (plasma electrolytic oxidation) coated alloy AA2024. 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxipropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (DHPTA) was identified as most effective one among additives. Its performance terms growth stimulation investigated. DHPTA additive provides an increase pH synthesis compared previously methods achieve hydration oxide from initial stage etching, soluble complex compounds Zn-DHPTA, necessary for ZnAl LDH. process also followed by intercalation into galleries. It shown that formed both surface insight pores parental coating. Moreover, it imparted lubricating properties hybrid Finally, PEO-LDH coating demonstrated higher corrosion resistance long-term stability comparing alloy.
