Chinese herbal medicine has offered an enormous source for developing novel bio-soft materials. In this research, the natural polysaccharide isolated from Dendrobium was employed as secondary building block to fabricate a “hybrid” hydrogel with synthetic poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers. Thanks presence of mannose units that contain cis-diol motifs on chain polysaccharides, efficient crosslinking borax is allowed and reversible covalent borate ester bonds are formed. Eventually, highly dynamic double-networked hydrogels were successfully prepared by integration polysaccharides PVA. Interestingly, introduction given rise more robust networks, leading enhanced thermal stability, mechanical strength, tensile capacity (>1000%) well rapid self-healing ability (<5 s) compared PVA/borax single networked hydrogel. Moreover, polysaccharides/PVA double network showed selective antibacterial activity towards S. aureus. The reported would provide scaffold hybridize bioactive polymers but multiple tailorable biomedical applications.
