The Hyde Amendment prohibits US federal spending on abortion, including Medicaid dollars. Seventeen states cover abortion care in their programs, using state funds, but causal evidence how coverage for affects pregnancy outcomes is limited. Using a difference-in-differences design and 2014-21 birth data from the Centers Disease Control Prevention that predate Supreme Court's Dobbs decision 2022, we evaluated 2018 policy introducing Illinois.
