Ameliorating the existing purification methods with more affordable, efficient, and industrially adoptable that remove heavy metal ions from contaminated drinking water constitutes a persistent technological challenge. Metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials their excellent adsorption performance are recently explored as an alternative method to traditional methods. Here, we report MOF/biopolymer composite-based aerogel is cost-effective, highly environmentally sustainable material for removal of large concentrations (1277 mg Pb2+, 466 Cd2+, 706 Cr6+ per gram aerogel) selective cationic dye crystal violet (310 mg/g) its mixture (anionic) methyl orange samples. The MOF used herein 2-methylimidazole zinc complex (ZIF-8), whereas biopolymer nontoxic biodegradable Iota-Carrageenan (iCG), sulfated polysaccharide extracted red seaweeds. We have transformed ZIF-8 powder into moldable, load-bearable, flexible, eco-friendly ZIF-8@iCG aerogel. SEM images confirmed physically embedded in Iota-Carrageenan, forming honeycomb structure. located onto fibers iCG, thermally stable, flame-retardant hydrogel, high mechanical strength intrinsic porosity. removes 92.03% Pb2+ intentionally spiked solution (1 ppm), making this sample drinkable upon three successive filtrations. thermodynamics ion suggest kinetics follow Langmuir isotherm model process endothermic. Ion leaching experiments negligible. Thus, newly designed potentially effective adsorbent organic dyes intended industrial use.
