Introduction. The global challenge of physical inactivity necessitates innovative approaches and strategies to optimize built environments in order promote healthy sustainable lifestyles, such as active transportation. For this reason, walkability is a crucial area research urban health, with several studies focusing on assessment frameworks. However, gap persists between theoretical development practical implementation. This study explores the application Milan Walkability Measurement Tool (MWM-Tool), framework previously developed by Politecnico di Milano, evaluate features favor integrating GIS technology an extended testing scope. It based scientific approach utilizing 10 sub-indicators divided into three macro-areas (Density, Diversity, Design), identified through comprehensive literature review. Method. Focusing MWM-Tool Milan, employs 88 Nuclei Local Identity (NILs), which are official designations for Milan’s neighborhoods, units analysis. Based previous experience, digitalization has been improved: geospatial data corresponding were filtered generate vector layers, primarily sourced from two public geographical platforms. GIS-based method produces thematic maps evaluating all neighborhoods according dimensions Density, Design. Darker lighter colors represent range scores. Both single indicators macro-area maps, well overall level generated illustrate results. Result. results macro dimension assessment, combining sub-indicators, provide objective view distribution walkable space quality Milan. Only 7 out achieved highest score, located city center, while suburban areas showed significantly lower By incorporating census data, also population across varying levels. it may be possible develop prioritize optimization features, revitalizing underserved fostering healthier community environment. Conclusion. georeferenced-data effective tool highlight both high quality, could used mobility lifestyle adoption, those requiring improvement policy decision makers. output provides reference further planning initiatives contributes enhancing pedestrian-oriented environments. Using open-source scalable can easily replicated other cities. system monitoring over time.
