ABSTRACT The leather industry stands out as a notable contributor to national and global economic growth. In Ethiopia, the tannery sector is important for exports, growth, employment. However, most pollutant generating environmentally unfriendly in world recognized significant source of pollution surface waters Ethiopia. This review aims assess characterization, treatment, impact wastewater. authors reviewed 117 published materials, including articles theses, related research area. results reveal that Ethiopian effluents contribute elevated levels chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological (BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS), chromium (Cr), sulfide (S 2− ), nitrogen, which exceed discharge limits compromise water quality rivers, notably Little Akaki River. adverse effects extend soil agricultural produce, posing risks public health. Conventional treatment methods are widely used wastewater but have limited effectiveness meeting regulatory standards. emphasizes urgent need strengthened policy enforcement investment modern technologies develop sustainable solutions mitigate environmental health impacts Additionally, nanomaterial‐based adsorption photocatalysis shown promising efficient removal, further recommended this

Every year, the global production of plastic waste reaches a staggering 400 million metric tons (Mt), precipitating adverse consequences for environment, food safety, and biodiversity as it degrades into microplastics (MPs). The multifaceted nature MP pollution, coupled with its intricate physiological impacts, underscores pressing need comprehensive policies legislative frameworks. Such measures, alongside advancements in technology, hold promise averting ecological catastrophe oceans. Mandated legislation represents pivotal step towards restoring oceanic health securing well-being planet. This work offers an overview policy hurdles, initiatives, prospective strategies addressing pollution due to MP. Additionally, this explores innovative approaches that yield fresh insights combating across various sectors. Emphasizing importance plastics treaty, article potential galvanize collaborative efforts mitigating pollution's deleterious effects on marine ecosystems. Successful implementation such treaty could revolutionize economy, steering circular, less polluting model operating within planetary boundaries. Failure act decisively risks exacerbating scourge attendant repercussions both humanity environment. Central endeavor are formulation, content, execution itself, which demand careful consideration. While recognizing is not panacea, serves mechanism enhancing governance elevating ambitions achieving zero by 2040. Adopting life cycle approach management allows nuanced understanding possible trade-offs between environmental impact economic growth, guiding selection optimal solutions socio-economic implications mind. By embracing strategy integrates measures technological innovations, we can substantially reduce influx litter at sources, safeguarding oceans future generations.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health problem, exacerbated by the excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in human medicine, animal care agriculture. Therefore, new strategies compounds are needed to overcome this issue. In view, it may be appropriate reconsider existing biomaterials alleviate antibiotic overuse. Chitin, naturally abundant amino mucopolysaccharide, poly-β-1, 4-N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). It white, hard, inelastic, nitrogenous polysaccharide source surface pollution coastal areas. Chitosan derives from partial N-deacetylation chitin originates shells crustaceans fungi cell walls. nontoxic natural antimicrobial polymer approved GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe United States Food Drug Administration). Chitin chitosan, non-toxic biopolymers, useful for wastewater treatment remove pollutants, such pharmaceuticals, heavy metals dyes. The described features make these biopolymers intriguing investigated their application antibacterials.
