Abstract The impact of urban expansion on achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) has become a significant research topic in the field geographic information science. In this article, we describe coupled cellular automata (CA)—‐What If? model to explore SDG11 “Sustainable cities and communities.” calculates overall residential land use demand based historical data archives using What planning support system (PSS), then allocates it CA that incorporates variables related SDG11.2.1 11.7.1. Historical datasets for years 2016 2021 from Southwest Sydney, Australia were used assess accuracy, after which two scenarios (years 2026) generated. Based modeling results, SDG‐related spatial can improve accuracy sub‐models an XGBoost machine learning training methodology. simulation results these confirm effectiveness CA‐What model, potential generate more reliable scenario than standalone PSS growth across internationally.
