Selective critical metal recovery from black mass leachates (BML) is a great challenge for the Li-ion batteries recycling sector. This paper shows potential of nanocellulose products as green adsorbents selective metals through multibatch sorption processes. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) 0.4 1.5 meq/g cationic demand, respectively, have been produced used biosorbents. Metal leaching non-pyrolyzed with HCl presented highest extraction yield, obtaining up to 10 g/L Co more than 1 Cu, Mn Ni. The were tested under different dosages pH conditions treatment both synthetic multimetal solution (MMS), Mn, Co, Ni, real BML, multiple step batch increase selectivity towards each metal. For MMS treatments, lowest (1–2) are favorable separation, reaching 135 g/g, while higher values (4–5) better recover Cu Selectivity indexes between could reached above 40 optimal conditions. around 3 enhanced Al 5 Li. In this case, recoveries 30 g/g. When CNCs used, 4 g/g was adsorbed, recovering 99 % present in waste. purity obtained at Although studied strongly sorbed onto nanocelluloses, concentration 2.5–5 these be extracted desorption tests.
