Quorum sensing (QS), a pivotal cell-to-cell communication mechanism in microbial communities, plays significant role regulating behaviors such as biofilm formation and sludge granulation, which are critical for the efficiency of wastewater treatment systems. This review provides thorough insight into QS pathway modulation, focusing on utilization signaling molecules, particularly N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), to augment aggregation extracellular polymeric substance synthesis within biotreatment system. The strategic addition exogenous AHLs has been demonstrated significantly accelerate granulation process aerobic anaerobic sludge, leading development more stable compact granules with enhanced settling velocity nutrient removal efficiency. Furthermore, impacts community structure function, diverse molecules forming complex regulatory network that can be leveraged improve performance biotechnological processes. In enhancing advantageous attributes biofilms, researchers have also immersed themselves exploration quorum quenching (QQ) strategies. These strategies adeptly applied disrupt pathways, thereby effectively managing membrane fouling bioreactors (MBRs). By employing QQ enzymes, synthetic analogs, bacterial strains, present effective approaches mitigate biofilm-related issues without adversely affecting innovative use immobilized enzymes integration strains MBRs shown promising results reducing maintaining operational stability. highlights dual potential manipulation both desirable controlling detrimental ones. providing deeper understanding underlying mechanisms practical applications QS/QQ pathway, scholars would expected develop efficient sustainable environmental biotechnology solutions beyond.
