This study examined biofilm thickness, density, and microbial composition in a full-scale MABR treating municipal wastewater, focusing on their spatial operational variability. The cassette arrangement created thickness gradient, with biofilms the front cassettes more than twice as thick those at back. Lower scouring intensity due to reduced airflow resulted thicker biofilms. Microbial communities varied longitudinally by phase, having higher relative abundance of anaerobic microorganisms, such fermenters sulfur reducers, fewer aerobic nitrifiers. Nitrosomonas were main ammonia oxidizers, while Nitrospira Ca. Nitrotoga dominated nitrite oxidizers. 16S RNA gene profiles showed strong correlations (R2 = 0.8) nitrification rates 0.4). Full-scale characteristics have not been studied before. Study findings practical implications for better modeling practices improved design future facilities.
