Abstract Urban dwellers’ use of public and private green spaces may have changed during the early years Covid-19 pandemic due to movement restriction. A survey was deployed in Brisbane Sydney, Australia 1 year after start restrictions (April 2021) explore relationships mental health wellbeing different patterns yard versus space visitation. More frequent initial correlated with lower stress, depression, anxiety higher wellbeing. However, greater duration visits (week prior survey) associated anxiety, depression scores, potentially because individuals seek nature immediately available for emotional regulation difficult times. As such, research on benefits, effects, and challenges UGSs gained widespread attention among scholars. Community gardens are growing in popularity worldwide, especially densely populated urban areas. They provide semi-public spaces for joint gardening activities and serve as social ecological retreats. The COVID-19 pandemic associated restrictions movement leisure led to a changed demand green spaces, but it remains unclear how affected the overall trend community gardens. We measured interest participate between 2018 2022 based on combination of counted application numbers qualitative responses from garden coordinators. Out 373 contacted gardens, 70 replied, distributed across 43 cities Switzerland, Germany, UK, USA, Canada New Zealand. find an increase participation 2022, both memory-based participation. A generalized linear mixed model shows significant increases applications 2019 (19 %), 2020 2021 (25 %) (16 not (−0.32 %).
