We examine the association of oil palm production with income and off-farm employment using a farm household survey independent producers in Cameroon. Employing different regression techniques empirical strategies, we find to be associated income, finding which is consistent per capita distribution. Exploring heterogeneity relationship between show that has potential benefit non-producers should they produce palm. Moving beyond effects at mean interest understanding who benefits more from production, also gains for all producers. This provides suggestive insights inclusive could stir development rural areas. Assessing implications on employment, evidence reduces likelihood participation employment. Our review demonstrates that a double-edged sword. On one hand, it significantly helped both producing non-producing countries’ economies by facilitating (re)export crude its byproducts creating employment opportunities. This stimulated rural economies, led poverty reduction, improved food security diets for households producer countries. other increased conflicts tension between local communities agro-industrial companies, worsened workers’ conditions, widened domestic economic inequality areas within given country. Farm households in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Americas continue to rapidly adopt oil palm, often at expense rainforests traditional food crops. The environmental income implications palm expansion have been extensively documented, albeit primarily using data from Southeast Asia. Beyond a few case studies, research on links between adoption, security dietary diversity among smallholders is scarce. This gap partly addressed this study Cameroon Indonesia, two countries with different backgrounds production, history marketing systems. Oil native but an exotic crop Indonesia that was commercialized decades ago. Household insecurity experience scales scores are computed, descriptive regression estimations employed for empirical analysis. Opposing results revealed, reflecting contextual differences production frontiers. farmers consume less diverse (0.038) than non-oil farmers. In other hand, perform better their counterparts more diversified foods (0.166), possibly explaining why Asia rapidly. No statistically significant relationship obtained security. findings also suggest income, employment, farm could explain observed diets.
