Abstract The metacommunity theory aims to understand the species dynamics at different scales by considering influence of local and regional processes. We conducted a systematic review zooplankton studies in global aquatic ecosystems (freshwater, marine estuarine) looking for distribution, time scale, type system, environment, group tested, ecological approach analyzed studies. also present an overview observed patterns environmental conditions. searched scientific published until December 2022 on Scopus Web Science using words: “zooplankton” “metacomunnit*.” Our results show that have become recurrent over (167 studies), especially pond systems groups rotifers, cladocerans copepods; however, several gaps remain related distribution low number streams, reservoirs, with functional phylogenetic diversity, elements structure. data improve knowledge time, help identify need be explored future bring general metacommunity.

Most ecological studies have focused on one snapshot in a single location and the same taxonomic group. However, relatively few explored different groups over multiple periods, particularly ephemeral Neotropical ecosystems. This study investigates seasonal dynamics of zooplankton communities their responses to environmental variables temporary pools Seasonally Dry Forest Ecosystem, Pernambuco, Brazil. We examined fluctuations species abundance, diversity, evenness Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotifera five rock pools. Although these are meters apart, they vary considerably size drought sensitivity, leading distinct mediated by water availability. asked (i) how do seasonally? (ii) Do shifts differ between Rotifera? And (iii) How spatial distance influence composition? hypothesized that Cladocera Copepoda positively affected rainy season, but is mostly common dry season. Our findings underscore seasonality as primary driver influencing abundance composition communities. observed higher during post-rainy was dominant strong variation evenness. Abstract Aquatic macrophytes serve as shelter and a direct source of food for invertebrates, in addition to indirectly providing items such algae, detritus, microorganisms. Thus, aquatic act habitat structuring elements, requiring distinction between complexity (physical formations fractal dimensions, density biomass) heterogeneity (diversity these structures). Here we explore the effects on invertebrate community. We collected invertebrates from 28 sampling sites along 13.7‐km stretch Baía River Brazil, examined specific groups (insects, microcrustaceans, other invertebrates). Environmental variables were also measured. aimed (measured by macrophyte (evaluated through functional diversity) richness abundance invertebrates. found that overall was positively influenced solely heterogeneity. For abundance, intermediate had more while positive impact. only abundance. groups, insect heterogeneity, decreased with high increased Microcrustacean complexity. Richness Invertebrates prefer stands Abundance is linked structural species strongly associated Furthermore, impact factors varies among groups. These findings emphasise importance integrating broad range metrics, biomass diversity, gain thorough understanding community dynamics future studies. Additionally, our study demonstrates preserving significantly enhances diversity species.

Abstract One of the major threats to biodiversity is changing fire regimes, particularly increasingly frequent fires, especially during dry season. However, studies on direct and indirect effects biotic responses in aquatic ecosystems are still scarce. In this study, we investigated how water quality phytoplankton community structure were affected by different ash concentrations from burning vegetation a tropical savanna. We used microcosm experiment simulate ecosystem with concentration scenarios evaluated composition, richness density over time. found increased total phosphorus ammoniacal nitrogen after addition, addition changes electrical conductivity. identified 242 taxa throughout species composition among treatments. taxonomic phytoplankton, green algae desmids The diatoms, algae, cyanobacteria also changed Our results suggest that terrestrial fires affects communities depending proportion input. serve as basis for further investigations abiotic conditions their long periods Finally, longer‐term experiments needed evaluate delayed community.
