Abstract The impact of typhoons on the ecology ocean has been observed using high‐accuracy satellite remote sensing data. However, few field observations in have conducted to understand effect biogeochemistry because typhoon is furious, dangerous, and unpredictable. Here, we investigated Typhoon Wipha coastal area western Guangdong, northwest South China Sea. Our results show that triggered phytoplankton blooms (the level Chl a increased 3.25 times after typhoon) nearshore (water depths <23 m); however, there was little change nutrients offshore between 23 60 m). Terrestrial runoff vertical seawater mixing were identified as main processes bring into thus triggering typhoon. Moreover, positive apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) unsaturated DO contents during posttyphoon period suggest significant consumption (i.e., degradation process biological respiration) caused by both areas. internal nutrient recirculation respiration are responsible for POC, PN pre‐ periods did not cause blooms. potential decomposition important biogeochemical impacts induced waters.

Abstract To investigate the impact of changes in Changjiang catchment on estuarine coast‐shelf sedimentary system, variations transport, distribution, and budget 210 Pb sediment subaqueous delta (CSD) Zhejiang‐Fujian coastal mud belt (ZFCMB) system were analyzed before after impounding Three Gorges Dam (TGD). The results indicate that ex activity surficial sediments CSD‐ZFCMB decreased significantly 2003 vertical distribution CSD changed substantially due to intensified redistribution. contribution is not negligible. Due trapping effect TGD, 76 ± 49% supply from upstream areas was retained resulting flux into sea substantially. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate cross‐shelf plume provides a major conduit for transport over East China Sea. variation also indicated influence supported activities will become more significant future. In addition, rate burial ZFCMB decreased, whereas retention index amount increased significantly, suggesting 2003, material transfer function weakened.

Abstract. The temperature proxies U37K′, LDI, TEX86H, and RI-OH are derived from lipid biomarkers, namely long-chain alkenones coccolithophorids diols ascribed tentatively to eustigmatophytes, as well glycerol dialkyl tetraethers (GDGTs) OH-GDGTs produced by Archaea. applicability of these in the South China Sea (SCS) has been investigated previously. However, each study only one or two were compared, recently updated calibrations new calibrating methods such BAYSPAR BAYSPLINE not applied. Here, we investigate four parallel a set surface sediment samples northern SCS shelf relate them local sea (SST), which allows for us compare assess similarities differences between also help improve regional multiproxy seawater reconstructions. Our results indicate that U37K′ reflects annual mean SST with slight bias toward warm season. Terrestrial inputs appear have significant impact on near coast, leading colder LDI- TEX86H-derived temperatures but warmer estimate. After excluding influenced terrestrial materials, find LDI-derived agrees SST, while TEX86H- RI-OH-derived estimates close SSTs seasons dominated East Asian winter monsoon summer monsoon, respectively. different seasonal biases provide valuable tools reconstruct under monsoonal conditions.
