Since 2011, massive strandings of holopelagic Sargassum have occurred on the coasts Caribbean and West Africa. Although open ocean mats are oases biodiversity, their stranding has a number negative ecological, economic health consequences. To limit these impacts, needs to be collected as quickly possible avoid its decomposition, which requires accurate predictions date, location abundance strandings. Two complementary approaches been developed for this purpose: satellite remote sensing technique, detect aggregations, modeling, forecast displacement growth. The objective review is provide synthesis current knowledge related monitoring in tropical Atlantic Ocean. better understand issues surrounding monitoring, first two parts devoted an overview ecology most prevailing species, strandings, causes occurrence Ocean seasonal interannual variabilities. methods used from images limitations examined. transport biogeochemical models described along with limitations. As both detection modeling rely validation data assess accuracy, previous works providing situ characterization also reviewed here. last part provides recommendations further increase improve

Abstract Starting in the summer 2023 and peaking late 2023, large amounts of Sargassum were observed floating off coast Madeira Islands, Portugal. The analysis samples revealed presence three most common morphotypes two known species pelagic : S. natans I, VIII, fluitans III. This is first record for subtropical eastern Atlantic Ocean VIII Both found entangled, even though main purpose study was to document occurrence archipelago, some associated fauna also recorded: crab Planes minutus (Linnaeus, 1758), amphi-Atlantic shrimps Latreutes fucorum (Fabricius, 1798) Hippolyte coerulescens 1775), nudibranch Scyllaea pelagica Linnaeus, 1758. last are new records archipelago.
