Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are a growing issue because they endanger both aquatic organisms and humans. Studies have indicated that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) one of the major contributors to MPs in environment. However, studies on abundance MP contamination WWTPs its transmission into still scarce, especially Egypt. The goal this study was examine temporal fluctuations distribution surface water dominant macroinvertebrate fauna ( Culex sp. larvae) fixed basin Sohag Governorate, average 3.01 ± 0.9 particles/L. results seasonal variation significantly higher winter than other seasons. risk index for polymers (H), pollution load (PLI), potential ecological (RI) were used assess degree contamination. has moderate H values (<1000) presence with hazard scores such as polyester (PES), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP). According PLI values, is extremely contaminated (PLI: 88 120). RI showed (level V). larvae seasonally changed an 85% detection rate, 0.24 0.65 particles/ind, concentration influenced by characters (shape, color, polymer). greater preference black red fibrous (PES) sizes (<1000 μm) MPs. These findings suggest prefer ingesting resemble their food. It possible overestimate sp.'s lower catabolism To better understand preferences MPs, further controlled trials should be conducted. ABSTRACT The effluent of WWTPs is an important source microplastics (MP) for the aquatic environment. In this review study, MPs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) Türkiye and their removal from are reviewed first time. First, MP characteristics influent discussed. next section, abundance efficiency evaluated. Then, results studies on Türkiye's environments presented suggestions made to reduce released into receiving environments. Strategies reducing environment summarized. last research gaps regarding identified future studies. This paper provides a comprehensive assessment abundance, dominant characteristics, Türkiye, as well current status deficiencies Türkiye. Therefore, can serve scientific guide improve
