Due to the increased prevalence of plastic pollution globally, atmospheric deposition microplastics (MPs) is a significant issue that needs be better understood identify potential consequences for human health. This study first quantify and characterize MP in Eastern United States. Passive sampling was conducted at two locations within States, specifically remote South Central Appalachia, from March September 2023. Each location had five periods, with collections over 21 day period. Samples were processed remove biological material, presence MPs confirmed using Raman spectroscopy match particles based on polymer similarity. The relative average Appalachia determined 68 m–2 d–1. Most verified fibers, most abundant type identified poly(ethylene terephthalate) PETE. study's rate qualitatively comparable rates reported other studies employed similar methodology landscape. Scaling up our measured all an area 94,000 km2 home million people, suggests yearly approximately 321 metric tonnes. Our highlights providing baseline data future work further assess routes introduction.
