Titanium alloy bipolar plates hold significant promise for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) due to their high specific strength, excellent machinability and low density. However, the surface oxide film readily reacts with fluoride ions (F − ) in service environments, forming porous, layered fluorotitanium compounds that compromise life stability. To overcome these limitations, this study utilised magnetron sputtering deposit a 1 μm-thick tantalum (Ta) coating on TA1 titanium substrates. The microstructure, corrosion resistance electrical conductivity of Ta-coated samples were systematically investigated mechanisms underlying enhanced performance analysed. Results showed Ta featured dense, uniform microstructure strong adhesion substrate no detectable metallurgical defects. A gradient distribution elements within diffusion layer further strengthened coating-substrate interface. Moreover, formation 2 O 5 passivation effectively inhibited fluoride-induced corrosion, reducing contact from 69.9 31.7 mΩ·cm . These findings provide critical theoretical insights practical guidance enhancing plates, paving way broader application PEMFC systems.
