Abstract In temperate broadcast spawners, gamete release within the reproductive period is often triggered by exogenous cues such as phytoplankton concentration, seawater temperature, or day length (photoperiod). Antarctica, little known about to spawning, even well-studied species, sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri. Here, we determine spawning time in S. neumayeri using of appearance embryos and larvae plankton samples collected from ice with a collapsible net. Collections McMurdo Sound at three locations along Victoria Land Coast Ross Sea [Cape Hallett (72°S), Terra Nova Bay (74°S), Granite Harbour (77°S)] over eight years showed that although there were differences embryo larval abundance between locations, multiple events occurred during late October/early November December, regardless latitude, appeared unrelated moon phase. Exogenous are limited early summer: sites covered light penetration water temperature generally stable. As season on Antarctic Peninsula maritime also October–December, hypothesize an endogenous cue plays role setting gametogenesis perhaps set phytodetrital inputs summer, seasonally breeding urchins deep sea. ABSTRACT Echinoderms exhibit a wide range of reproductive strategies as adaptations to variable environments. The processes gonadal development, germ cell differentiation, and spermatogenesis in echinoderms are crucial physiological that warrant further in‐depth exploration. This review systematically summarizes research from early basic sciences recent studies on male development spermatogenesis, encompassing morphology, histology, physiology, biology, developmental evolutionary biology. We introduce the structural cellular similarities differences among model or non‐model organisms five classes provide insights for future comparative between higher vertebrates lower organisms. regulatory systems involved echinoderm described various aspects including nutritional supply, environmental factors, neurological influences, endocrinological hormonal influences. article aims elucidate echinoderms—organisms at unique nodes—providing valuable materials studying adaptive evolution Additionally, comprehensive summary characterized genes gene markers associated with testes is provided useful information systematic subpopulations. Future can focus molecular changes chromatin remodeling during intercellular communication mediated by receptor‐ligand interactions, our understanding biological networks spermatogenesis.

Sea urchin (Mesocentrotus nudus) is a commercially significant mariculture species, with its gonads being the exclusive edible parts for humans. Identifying sex-related genes an effective approach elucidating underlying molecular mechanisms of gonad development in sea urchins. Some cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily members play critical roles sex differentiation, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and ovarian steroidogenesis. In present study, we identified 83 CYPs assigned to 17 families from gonadal transcriptomic data M. nudus, most clustering within CYP 2 family branches. Furthermore, 11 gender-biased CYPs, including 17A1, 2, 3A24, 4V2, 46A1, as well related 1A1, 1A5, 3, 17A1. The expression patterns those candidate were also analyzed. findings lay foundation further investigating role endogenous synthesis steroids, offering valuable insights into differentiation
