This work is part of a 10-year project to examine thawing permafrost peatlands and the first virome-particle-based approach characterize viruses in these systems. method yielded >2-fold-more viral populations (vOTUs) per gigabase metagenome than vOTUs derived from bulk-soil metagenomes same site (J. B. Emerson, S. Roux, J. R. Brum, Bolduc, et al., Nat Microbiol 3:870–880, 2018, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41564-018-0190-y ). We compared ecology recovered along thaw gradient found (i) habitat specificity, (ii) shift community identity soil-like aquatic-like viruses, (iii) infection dominant microbial hosts, (iv) carriage host metabolic genes. These can impact ecosystem carbon processing via top-down (inferred lysing hosts) bottom-up auxiliary genes) controls. serves as foundation which future studies build upon increase our understanding soil virosphere how affect services.

Communities of soil microorganisms (soil microbiomes) play a major role in biogeochemical cycles and support plant growth. Here we focus primarily on the roles that microbiome plays cycling organic carbon impact climate change cycle. We first discuss current challenges understanding carried out by highly diverse heterogeneous microbiomes review existing knowledge gaps how will microbiome. Because stability is key metric to understand as changes, different aspects stability, including resistance, resilience, functional redundancy. We then recent research pertaining perturbations functions they carry out. Finally, new experimental methodologies modeling approaches under development should facilitate our complex nature better predict its future responses change.

Major losses of crop yield and quality caused by soil-borne plant diseases have long threatened the ecology economy agriculture forestry. Biological control using beneficial microorganisms has become more popular for management pathogens as an environmentally friendly method protecting plants. Two major barriers limiting disease-suppressive function biocontrol microbes are inadequate colonization hosts inefficient inhibition pathogen growth, due to biotic abiotic factors acting in complex rhizosphere environments. Use a consortium microbial strains with disease inhibitory activity may improve efficacy disease-inhibiting microbes. The mechanisms biological not fully understood. In this review, we focus on bacterial fungal agents summarize current state use single strain multi-strain consortia diseases. We discuss potential used components suppressing efficacy. emphasize interaction-related be considered when constructing multiple-strain propose workflow assembling them applying reductionist synthetic community approach.

Microbiome research has increased dramatically in recent years, driven by advances technology and significant reductions the cost of analysis. Such unlocked a wealth data, which yielded tremendous insight into nature microbial communities, including their interactions effects, both within host an external environment as part ecological community. Understanding role microbiota, dynamic with hosts other microbes, can enable engineering new diagnostic techniques interventional strategies that be used diverse spectrum fields, spanning from ecology agriculture to medicine forensics exobiology. From June 19-23 2017, NIH NSF jointly held Innovation Lab on Quantitative Approaches Biomedical Data Science Challenges our Microbiome. This review is inspired some topics arose priority areas this unique, interactive workshop. The goal summarize Lab's findings introducing reader emerging challenges, exciting potential, current directions microbiome research. broken five key topic areas: (1) between microbes human body, (2) evolution played microbe-microbe interactions, (3) analytical mathematical methods currently research, (4) leveraging knowledge composition develop solutions, (5) approaches may enabled selectively altering composition. As such, seeks arm broad understanding priorities challenges today provide inspiration for future investigation multi-disciplinary collaboration.
