Breath analysis is increasingly recognized as a powerful noninvasive diagnostic technique, and plethora of exhaled volatile biomarkers have been associated with various diseases. However, traditional analytical methodologies are not amenable to high-throughput applications at the point need. An optical spectroscopic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), mostly used in research setting for liquid sample analysis, has recently applied breath-based diagnostics. This promising tool demonstrated identification diseases, including lung cancer, gastric diabetes. The versatility SERS enabled use different strategies allowed fast accurate detection small analytes breath. In this review, we provide an overview recent advances SERS-based breath focusing on sensors gases organic compounds (VOCs) breath, highlight generic preconcentration methods spectral analysis.
