Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a class of ionic liquid analogues that have received heightened research attention in recent years. These binary or ternary mixtures composed quaternary salts, metal organic compounds exhibit hydrogen bond donating and accepting behaviours within the DES system, forming network results melting point depression. The facile preparation DESs coupled with virtually unlimited combination components enables large number unique to be produced, characterized, applied; accordingly, highly tailorable can prepared for specific applications. Numerous applied studies utilized DESs; however, current fundamental knowledge physicochemical phase equilibria properties is relatively limited compared wide spectrum possible formulations. Furthermore, available reporting encompasses multitude parameters, from density conductivity more niche such as vapour pressure acoustic properties. Therefore, comprehensive review compiles evaluates works documenting required improve our understanding their prospective applications, identify gaps this critical area. Accordingly, paper aims act reference on illuminate efforts dedicated foundational

Seven hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (hDESs) were characterised to evaluate their potential applicability in different industries and environmental impact. Standard physicochemical properties determined, yielding polarity density values that slightly higher for thymol-based hDESs than menthol-based ones, whereas viscosity, the trend was opposite. Regarding biologically relevant activities, antioxidative capacity antimicrobial activity of determined. Thymol-based are more potent as antioxidants, especially one with coumarin a hydrogen bond acceptor, which had highest Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. Antimicrobial assessed on four bacterial strains yeast strain. Calculated minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) showed all possess this activity, even antimycotic effect against C. albicans observed. Furthermore, ensure safety these human use, vitro cytocompatibility tested three cell lines (HaCaT, CaCo-2, HeLa), no cytotoxic observed up 1000 mg L-1. Finally, impact by phytotoxicity test assay wheat determined selected hDESs, found be toxic, effects plant defence mechanisms induced stress. Overall, terpene-based demonstrate alternative various industries, including food production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, variants exhibiting slight advantage relation parameters evaluated study.
