A phosphonium phosphinate-functionalized ionic liquid, Cyphos IL 104, has been evaluated for the highly efficient extraction of Pu(IV) from aqueous feeds containing nitric acid, showing various mechanisms dependent on acid concentration. At 1 M HNO3, was found to proceed via a "cation exchange" mechanism involving Pu(NO3)2[(R4P+)(R2POO–)]22+species, whereas in 7 it proceeded an "ion-pair" neutral species Pu(NO3)6(R4P+)2. separation factor Pu over U (SFPu–U = DPu/DU) be ∼2, while that Am (SFPu–Am DPu/DAm) ∼30. In case SFPu–U value increased ∼14, SFPu–Am have significantly 8400. The UO22+ and Am3+ ions followed at both acidities, albeit with different speciations. processes were spontaneous, ΔG values following trend ΔGPu > ΔGU ΔGAm. plutonium exothermic higher entropy change complexation, indicating formation inner-sphere complex. sluggish mass transfer during attributed relatively high viscosity liquid. solvent systems exhibit good radiolytic stability up 1000 kGy γ ray exposure. A novel approach for mutual separation between Nd and Pr has been demonstrated by the selective dissolution of Nd2O3 into an ionic liquid (C4mim·NTf2) containing two β diketones, viz., acetyl trifluoroacetone (ATA) benzoyl (BTA), directly from a physical mixture their most stable oxides, i.e., Pr6O11, avoiding cumbersome aqueous phase subsequent chemistry. Exothermic, spontaneous inner-sphere complexation of trivalent lanthanides with N,N,N′,N′,N″,N″-hexaalkyl-substituted nitrilotriacetamides (HRNTAs) into 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C6mim NTf2) is reported a predominant presence ML and ML2 complexes having constants, β1Eu 3.10 ± 0.02 ,β1Nd 2.67 0.03 β2Eu 5.22 0.04, β2Nd 4.95 0.02, respectively, for the n-butyl-substituted HRNTA (HBNTA); while those n-hexyl derivative (HHNTA) are 4.27 0.03, β1Nd 3.71 7.70 7.18 respectively. HHNTA shows better complexing ability; whereas stronger Nd3+ over Eu3+ attributed to lanthanide contraction. Furthermore, nature ionic liquid also influences extent trend: C4mim NTf2 > C6mim C8mim NTf2, which follows order their dielectric constants. Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated from photoluminescence data get an idea about symmetry complexes. Electrochemical investigations give diffusion coefficient values 1.17 × 10–7 8.26 10–8 cm2/s HBNTA HHNTA, Changes in spectral characteristics peak positions evidenced FTIR spectra on ligands NTf2. Structure optimization was performed by DFT computations.
