Abstract The deep eutectic solvent (DES) formed between choline chloride (ChCl) and para‐toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (pTSA) is considered to be a promising for green solvometallurgical processes. However, concerns regarding the credentials of this DES potential degradation pathways releasing toxic hydrochloric (HCl) remain. Here we report on ChCl‐pTSA via liberation HCl gas. Dynamic thermogravimetric analysis – quadrupole mass spectrometry (TGA‐QMS)(RT 200 °C) confirmed both loss moisture, through dehydration, release HCl, which was due presence two peaks at 36 (HCl 35 ) 38 37 ). Isothermal TGA‐QMS occurred as low 40 °C, typical synthesis temperature DES, implying that will released no matter operational temperature. Degradation led ChCl:pTSA solidifying, rendering it unusable solvent. Both subsequent 1 H NMR indicated further products were produced with solid product concluded tosylate. This renders classification mixture ‘green sustainable solvent’ questionable, questions use acidic hydrogen bond donors precursors.
