Histones are recognized as one of the most conserved proteins across eukaryotes. They not only ensure DNA compaction in nucleus but also participate epigenetic regulation genome expression. These key players divided into canonical histones, expressed during S-phase, and variants, throughout cell cycle. Compared with other core H2A exhibit a high level variability characterization algal variants remains very limited. In this study, we exploited data from 21 species to perform phylogenetic analysis brown seaweeds. We identified new that specific Phaeophyceae closely-related sister group species. For each protein, characterized motifs present histone fold domain well N- C-terminal tails. This approach enabled us classify different isoforms identify three (H2A.N, H2A.O H2A.E). Based on mass spectrometry RNA-Seq data, distinct epigenetics marks expression patterns both vegetative reproductive tissues response various environmental conditions. analyses sperm-specific inferred putative roles for newly discovered variants.

Abstract The rhodophyte Palmaria palmata (L.) Weber & Mohr is one of the target species a growing European seaweed industry due to its high content protein and essential amino acids which makes it suitable for human food, dietary supplements, as salmon feed. However, lack published nuclear genome limits phylogenetics analyses gene function investigations could help development breeding programme. We present first draft P. that was obtained with PacBio HiFi long read sequencing average coverage 10×, consisting an assembly 1.05 Gb, N50=2.75Mb BUSCO completeness 72.1%. Additionally, population study on whole 33 individuals from across Northern East Atlantic area found three main clusters consistent their geographic distribution: (1) Denmark Norway, (2) France western Ireland, (3) Faroe Islands. All Ireland share ancestry Denmark, some Islands show admixture Faroe, Ireland. These results represent fundamental step towards genetic studies further explore vastly unexploited economic potential . Highlights - report , reads. size genome, among largest so far Rhodophyta. Abstract Seaweed farming is the single largest aquaculture commodity with >30 million tonnes produced each year. Furthermore, restoration of lost seaweed forests gaining significant momentum, particularly for kelps in warming temperate areas. Whether settings, following practices, or wild, all seaweeds undergo biotic interactions a diverse range co‐occurring cocultured organisms. To date, most research assessing such has focused on response organism interacting seaweeds, rather than themselves. However, understanding how respond to other organisms, molecular scale, crucial optimizing outcomes efforts and, potentially, also conservation natural populations. In this systematic review, we assessed processes that during and propose priority areas future research. Despite some insights into interactions, review specifically highlights lack characterization biomolecules involved chemical cues derived from organisms (four studies last 20 years) predominant use laboratory‐based experiments conducted under controlled conditions. Additionally, reveals targeting metabolites (70%) are more common those examining role genes (22%) proteins (8%). effectively inform efforts, it will be conduct larger scale simulating environments. Also, employing holistic approach would beneficial complement relatively well‐established metabolites.
