The emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in the global drug market since 2000s has posed major challenges for regulators and law enforcement agencies. Among these, synthetic cathinones have gained prominence due to their stimulant effects on central nervous system, leading widespread recreational use. These compounds, often marketed as alternatives illicit stimulants such amphetamines cocaine, been linked numerous cases intoxication, addiction death. structural diversity enantiomeric forms further complicate detection regulation pose forensic toxicology. In addition toxicological effects, research suggests that may antimicrobial properties. Compounds derived from Catha edulis (khat), including cathinone, shown activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli, highlighting potential role fight antibiotic resistance. This article provides an overview chemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, applications cathinones. therapeutic use cathinone-derived compounds combat resistance represents exciting frontier development, although is needed balance these benefits with risks.
