This comprehensive review explores the advancements in study of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), highlighting their potential as promising alternatives to conventional antibiotics context growing antibiotic resistance. AMPs are small molecular proteins found ubiquitously nature, exhibiting broad-spectrum activity, including antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects, vital components innate immune system. Due non-specific membrane-disrupting mechanism, emerging effective candidates for novel anti-infective agents. The integration with biomaterials, such nanoparticles, liposomes, polymers, hydrogels, enhances stability efficacy while offering multifunctional therapeutic benefits. These combinations promote diverse antibacterial mechanisms, membrane disruption, intracellular metabolic interference, cell wall modulation, system activation. Despite challenges, toxicity, stability, resistance, innovative strategies computer-aided design structural modification show promise optimizing AMPs’ targeting precision, biocompatibility. clinical applications remains highly promising, significant opportunities overcoming resistance through AMP-based strategies.
