Brownfields, abandoned or underutilized lands having the potential for contamination due to industrial activities, pose health risks nearby residents and raise environmental justice (EJ) concerns. This study examines relationship between brownfield distribution socioeconomic factors in New Jersey, a state with over 700 sites, using correlation, spatial autoregression, instrumental variable regression methods. Results show that brownfields are associated higher combined EJ stressors, indicating compounding pollution affected areas. Brownfields disproportionately correlated lower household income, rates of uninsured individuals, educational attainment, greater percentage people color. When accounting autocorrelation, relationships education, distributions reduced, reflecting Jersey’s historical, environmental, social contexts. Overall, presence color maintains strongest association distribution. highlights ongoing challenges faced by disadvantaged groups emphasizes need targeted mitigation measures enhance sustainability equity. Jersey serves as critical case given its ethnic diversity, growing urban population, status highest population density United States, illustrating broader trends disproportionate exposure among marginalized communities.

Urban green spaces (UGS) are vital for the quality of life in cities. However, managing these metropolitan areas is increasingly challenging. There a critical gap regarding specific challenges and strategies employed by municipalities varying sizes emerging economies. Most existing research focuses on developed countries, leaving void understanding how economies manage UGS under different constraints. This study delves into associated with region São Paulo (MRSP), Brazil, comparing experiences to provide empirical evidence that can inform policy making urban planning practices similar contexts. A structured questionnaire was distributed environmental departments across 39 MRSP. The survey included questions population size, priority given UGS, faced adopted overcome barriers. Chi-square tests were used analyze association between municipality size identified strategies. found larger face significant barriers related high density land use conflicts, which less pronounced smaller municipalities. all Policy makers should focus promoting vertical spaces, expanding greening programs, ensuring equitable resource allocation. Public–private partnerships community involvement processes crucial sustainable management. Integrating policies broader development plans essential creating cohesive environments. Further conduct comparative studies multiple regions countries more comprehensive management globally. integrates insights from ecology, landscape architecture, public policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approach required effective findings offer practical guidance planners architects design landscapes.

Urban green spaces (UGSs) play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life cities, particularly rapidly urbanizing regions such as Metropolitan Region São Paulo (MRSP). However, significant challenges related to equitable management and access persist, often exacerbated by socio-environmental inequalities. While much existing literature on UGS focuses developed economies, there is gap our understanding how community engagement influences outcomes emerging which face unique socio-economic infrastructural constraints. This study addresses this investigating impact MRSP, specifically examining increased participation correlates with improved reduced inequality. Utilizing survey data from 33 municipal environmental departments across research applied correlation tests, generalized linear models, non-parametric analysis variance evaluate relationships between engagement, coverage, The findings reveal moderate positive alongside negative Increased levels were associated greater UGSs reduction disparities groups. These results underscore potential fostering involvement promote urban equity sustainability through institutional support transparent information sharing. Future should focus longitudinal studies better understand long-term effects sustained incorporate qualitative members provide more comprehensive participatory processes. Additionally, expanding scope include informal private will offer holistic greening dynamics.

Urban Green Spaces (UGS) are integral to advancing urban sustainability and improving the quality of life in cities. However, rapidly urbanizing regions like São Paulo Metropolitan Region (MRSP), significant environmental injustices UGS accessibility present a complex challenge that requires in-depth understanding. Notably, existing studies predominantly focus on developed countries, leaving gap research concerning emerging economies Global South. This study aims analyze associations between sociodemographic factors racism within municipalities MRSP. The utilizes Spearman Rank Correlation multiple linear regression analyses data sourced from Brazilian Institute Geography Statistics Data Platform. Key variables include number inhabitants, territorial area, population density, urbanization rate, gross domestic product (GDP), human development index (HDI), vegetation coverage, per capita, difference total Black or Indigenous populations residing outside vicinity UGSs as an indicator racism. findings reveal correlations higher GDP HDI with increased accessibility, suggesting that, absence equitable policies, economic may exacerbate disparities green space distribution. Moreover, demonstrates coverage is significantly associated reduced disparities, underscoring role greenery mitigating inequality. These results emphasize need for comprehensive planning targeted policies prioritize UGS, particularly underserved areas. Future should explore longitudinal establish causality consider additional such political governance cultural factors, which could provide more understanding accessibility.
