Abstract Previous evidence suggests males and females differ with respect to interoception—the processing of internal bodily signals—with typically outperforming on tasks interoceptive accuracy. However, interpretation existing in the cardiac domain is hindered by limitations tools. In this investigation, we pooled data from several samples examine sex differences accuracy phase adjustment task, a new measure that overcomes sample 266 individuals, observed outperformed males, indicative better accuracy, but had lower confidence than males. These results held after controlling for demographic, physiological engagement factors. Importantly, these were specific No individuals who completed structurally identical screener although similar pattern was relation confidence. surprising suggest presence female advantage potential awareness (metacognition). Possible reasons mixed literature, as well implications theory future research, are discussed.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory gynaecological condition frequently associated with pelvic pain. Visceral hypersensitivity could be present, like in other pain conditions, causing altered levels of interoception. So far, studies have explored interoceptive deficits individuals mainly using questionnaires or cardiac accuracy tasks. Here, we explore the cardiac, gastric, and urinary domains to probe differences between patients endometriosis healthy women. 30 controls underwent three tasks for assessing domain (using Heartbeat Counting Task, HCT), gastric Water Load Test-II, WLT-II) bladder novel Urinary Interoceptive UIT). Participants also completed beliefs measures subjective ratings each symptom (dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, dyschezia, pain). A positive correlation WLT-II UIT emerged all participants (R = 0.47, p < 0.001), indicating that lower abilities, ones. Moreover, compared controls, women exhibited scores (t(58) 4.6814, 0.001) (t(39.931)= 5.1462, as well higher questions (t(57.346)= -4.0304, 0.001). Results indicate dissociation patients’ poor objective performance on their high beliefs. were symptoms, suggesting patients, probably due sensitisation, struggle ignore discomfort sensations, resulting reduced detecting physiological signals coming from area.
