Abstract Neuroimaging studies investigating the association between mental fatigue (henceforth fatigue) and brain physiology have identified many regions that may underly cognitive changes induced by fatigue. These focused on functional connectivity of relating to The structural correlates fatigue, however, received little attention. To fill this gap, study explored associations with cortical thickness frontal parietal regions. In addition, we aimed explore reward-induced improvement in performance neuroanatomical markers fatigued individuals. Thirty-nine healthy volunteers performed psychomotor vigilance task for 15 min (i.e., 3 time-on-task blocks 5 min) out scanner; followed an additional rewarded block lasting min. Baseline high-resolution T1-weigthed MR images were obtained. Reaction time increased but got faster again block. Participants’ subjective during performance. found higher increase was associated following areas: bilateral precuneus, right precentral gyrus; pars triangularis left superior gyrus. Our results suggest individual differences be explained degree areas are motor processes, executive functions, intrinsic alertness parts default mode network.

Fatigue is a multidimensional phenomenon. Although psychological tests can be used to evaluate subjective fatigue, an objective measurement of fatigue needed mental, physical, and occupational health inform appropriate interventions. Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as potential candidate for assessing mental fatigue; however, its effectiveness safety remain inconclusive. To address these, we conducted single-center, randomized trial compare the efficacy HRV with evaluating fatigue. Participants aged 20 65 years who had received annual check-ups been found have no concerns were included in this study. We compared indexes after performing calculation task control group that rested. The primary outcomes recorded by wearable electrocardiography intervention consisting task. Subjective measures (visual analog scale [VAS] Profile Mood States 2nd Edition [POMS2]) evaluated secondary outcomes. In tests, demonstrated significantly higher scores on VAS POMS2. Fatigue-specific changes in the autonomic nervous system are often assumed to underlie development of mental fatigue caused by prolonged cognitive tasks (i.e. Time-on-Task). Therefore, several previous studies have chosen investigate Time-on-Task related heart rate variability (HRV). However, used many different HRV indices, and their results show inconsistencies. The present study, therefore, systematically reviewed empirical with healthy individuals which is induced tasks. Articles relevant objectives were searched selected applying PRISMA guidelines. We screened 360 records found on 4 databases that 19 eligible for full review accordance inclusion criteria. In general, all (with exception two studies) significant increasing Time-on-Task, suggesting a reliable marker fatigue. most conclusive indices showed consistent effect low frequency component time domain particularly root mean square successive differences. typically an trend both type measures.

We tested the association between brain an objective measure fatigability Study Muscle, Mobility Aging (N=119, age 76.8±4.0 years, 59.7% women). Total cerebral metabolic rate oxygen (CMRO 2 ) was measured using arterial spin labeling T -relaxation under tagging MRI protocols. Accelerometry-based status during a fast-paced 400m walk determined Pittsburgh Fatigability Index (PPFI, higher=worse). Confounders included energetics, vivo spectroscopy ex respirometry, cardiorespiratory fitness (VO peak), weight, medication count, multimorbidity. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate (odds ratio (OR)) CMRO with PPFI>0 compared referent group PPFI=0. Models first adjusted for sex, further confounders. In this sample, 41.2% had (median 3.3% [0.4-8.0%]). positively associated (age sex OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.06, 2.45, p=0.03); adjustment confounders attenuated association. The positive warrants study adults.
