This study aimed to characterize the role of sex and pubertal markers in reward motivation behavior neural processing early adolescence. We used baseline two-year follow-up data from Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM (15844 observations; 52% boys; age 9–13). Pubertal development was measured with parent-reported Development Scale, DHEA, testosterone, estradiol levels. Reward at anticipation feedback stages were assessed Monetary Incentive Delay task. Boys had higher than girls, demonstrating greater accuracy difference between neutral trials task earnings. Girls lower activation during boys nucleus accumbens, caudate, rostral anterior cingulate, medial orbitofrontal cortex, superior frontal gyrus posterior cingulate. stage testosterone levels positively associated behavior, although these associations changed when controlling for age. There no significant feedback. Sex differences reward-related exist adolescence, signaling need understand their impact on typical atypical functioning as it unfolds into adulthood.

Published: Oct. 28, 2024

The emotional climate of the family and peer group are theorized to play a central role in development emotion regulation (ER) children adolescents, such that warmer, more supportive environments promote effective ER. However, most studies demonstrating associations between social interactions ER use have focused on individual differences negative affect. This study is first investigate whether with versus peers differentially associated ER, both positive affect, using unique multi-timescale approach which daily assessments were nested within longitudinal design. Our sample included 112 youths, ages 8-15 at baseline racially/ethnically representative our northeast American recruitment area, who completed two waves diaries (21 28 days) approximately one year apart. Every evening, participants reported number valence they had members friends, their strategies, producing total 5,074 diary entries. We found evidence that: (1) experiencing interpersonal events was greater whereas counterproductive strategies; (2) strongly changes younger while friend older youths. Altogether, results provide novel for reorientation effect development, highlighting lasting influence close relationships during transition adolescence.

Abstract Although prior research has demonstrated enhanced striatal response when sharing rewards with close social connections, less is known about how individual differences affect ventral (VS) activation and connectivity experiencing within contexts. Given that self-reported reward sensitivity level of substance use have been associated in VS activation, we set out to investigate whether these factors would be independently enhancements neural responses In this pre-registered study, participants (N=45) underwent fMRI while playing a card guessing game which correct or incorrect guesses resulted monetary gains losses were shared evenly either friend, stranger (confederate), non-human partner. Consistent our work, found increased socially peer as opposed an out-of-network stranger. As increased, the difference friends strangers decreased. We also between temporoparietal junction strangers. Finally, exploratory analyses revealed sub-clinical increase, right fusiform face area increases function context. These findings demonstrate responsivity context may tied habits; together inform predictions risk for future mental health disorders.
