Metastability, a concept from dynamical systems theory, provides framework for understanding how the brain shifts between various functional states and underpins essential cognitive, behavioural, social function. While studied in adults, metastability early development has only received recent attention. As undergoes dramatic structural changes over third gestational trimester, here we review these are reflected metastable dynamics preterm, preterm at term-equivalent full-term neonates. We synthesize findings EEG, fMRI, fUS, computational models, focusing on spatial distribution temporal of states, which include integration segregation, signal predictability complexity. Despite fragmented evidence, studies suggest that neonatal develops equivalent with increasing ability integration-segregation, broader range faster state transitions greater Preterms age exhibit immature features compared to full-terms. explain interpret terms maturation free energy landscape establishment cognitive functions.

This study investigates the feasibility of a dry electrode cap design for neonatal electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings. Recordings on phantom and real infant are compared between novel clinically used gel-based cap. The recordings included measuring both contact force signal quality during still respiration-like head motion. were assessed EEG signals’ spectral characteristics, including powerline interference. Compared to caps, caps showed largely comparable skin force, an expectedly greater sensitivity motion-induced artifacts, slightly lower no significant marks after using electrode, compositions dry- caps. These findings suggest that with technically feasible, but movement-related such as respiration in supine lying infant, may challenge long-term spontaneous activity. Yet, ease use calls future studies define optimal case

Systems neuroscience studies have shown that baseline brain activity can be categorized into large-scale networks (resting-state-networks, RNSs), with influence on cognitive abilities and clinical symptoms. These insights guided millimeter-precise selection of stimulation targets based RSNs. Concurrently, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) revealed states, measured by EEG signal power or phase, affect outcomes. However, dynamics in these are mostly limited to single regions channels, lacking the spatial resolution needed for accurate network-level characterization. We aim at mapping high temporal precision assess whether occurrence specific network-level-states impact TMS outcome. To this end, we will identify explore how their relates corticospinal excitability. This study leverages Hidden Markov Models states from pre-stimulus source space high-density-EEG data collected during targeting left primary motor cortex twenty healthy subjects. The association between fMRI-defined RSNs was explored using Yeo atlas, trial-by-trial relation excitability examined. extracted fast-dynamic unique spatiotemporal spectral features resembling major engagement different significantly influences excitability, larger evoked potentials when dominated sensorimotor network. findings represent a step forward towards characterizing network EEG-TMS both underscore importance incorporating experiments.
