Cortical Activation and Functional Connectivity during Different Attention Tasks Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Middle-aged and elderly people

Background Attention plays a vital part in the cognitive process, where different kinds of attention are associated with separate brain mechanisms. The objective this research was to investigate patterns activation and functional connectivity middle-aged elderly individuals while they were engaged various attentional tasks, intention establishing reference foundation for clinical treatment disorders. Material methods A total 44 healthy persons (47.1% women) aged over 40 enrolled study. digital cancellation test (DCT), paced auditory serial addition (PASAT), Stroop colour-word test, trail making (TMT) respectively four types tasks: sustained attention, divided selective shifting. Functional near-infrared spectroscopic imaging employed measure concentration oxyhaemoglobin subjects performing these tasks. Results In our study, we found distinct areas such as BA-3, BA-4, BA-6, others. analysis revealed that frontal right parietal lobes consistently showed higher density strength connections across PASAT task exhibiting highest number exceeding threshold. Notably, DCT demonstrated significant correlations oxygen fluctuations among several regions, TMT-B highlighted strong within bilateral lobes. Conclusions This provides evidence people have suggesting individualized disorder patients based on impairment type location.
