Abstract Although inhibitory control is essential to goal-directed behavior, not all inhibition the same: Previous research distinguished discarding an action plan from simply withholding it, suggesting separate neurophysiological mechanisms. This study tracks signatures of both using time–frequency transformation and beamforming in n = 34 healthy individuals. We show that reduces working memory load, with stronger initial theta band activity compared it. oscillatory difference was localized (para-)hippocampus anterior temporal lobe, likely reflecting need dissolve features first enable following decrease load. Contrary, when exposed embedded stimulus, associated higher theta, alpha, beta relative discarding. advances our understanding by revealing distinct mechanisms functional neuroanatomical structures involved versus action.
