Serotonin and dopamine are major neuromodulators. Here, we used a modified rabies virus to identify monosynaptic inputs serotonin neurons in the dorsal median raphe (DR MR). We found that DR MR spatially shifted forebrain, receive from more medial structures. Then, compared these data with ventral tegmental area (VTA) substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). remarkably similar set of areas as VTA apart striatum, which preferentially targets neurons. Our results suggest three input streams: stream regulates neurons, an intermediate lateral SNc These provide fundamental organizational principles afferent control for dopamine.

The basal ganglia are involved in sensorimotor functions and action selection, both of which require the integration sensory information. In order to determine how such inputs integrated, we obtained whole-cell recordings mouse dorsal striatum during presentation tactile visual stimuli. All recorded neurons responded bilateral whisker stimulation, a subpopulation also stimulation. Neurons responding stimuli were located dorsomedial striatum, whereas those only deflections dorsolaterally. Responses mediated by overlapping excitation inhibition, with onset preceding that inhibition several milliseconds. differed according type neuron, direct pathway MSNs having larger responses longer latencies between ipsilateral contralateral than indirect MSNs. Our results suggest acts as "hub" specialized functional roles for different neuron types.

Technological advances over the last decade are changing face of behavioral neuroscience research. Here we review recent work on use one such transformative tool in research, chemogenetics (or Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Drugs, DREADDS). As technologies as DREADDs introduced, applied, and refined, their utility addressing complex questions about behavior cognition becomes clear exciting. In field, remarkable new findings now regularly appear a result ability to monitor intervene neural processes with high anatomical precision animals behave task environments. these tools applied questions, individualized procedures for find way into diverse labs. Thus, "tips trade" become important wide dissemination not only laboratories that using but also those who interested incorporating them own work. Our aim is provide an up-to-date perspective how DREADD technique being used research learning memory, decision making, goal-directed behavior, well suggestions considerations current future users based our collective experience.
