There is a growing appreciation for the cerebellum beyond its role in motor function and accumulating evidence that hippocampus interact across range of brain states behaviors. Acute chronic manipulations, simultaneous recordings, imaging studies together indicate coordinated coactivation bidirectional functional connectivity relevant various physiological functions, including spatiotemporal processing. This likely supported by multiple circuit paths. It also important temporal lobe epilepsy: impacted seizures epilepsy, modulation cerebellar circuitry can be an effective strategy to inhibit hippocampal seizures. review highlights some recent key hippobellum literature.

How valuable a choice option is often changes over time, making the prediction of value an important challenge for decision making. Prior studies identified cognitive map in hippocampal-entorhinal system that encodes relationships between states and enables future states, but does not inherently convey during prospective In this fMRI study, participants predicted changing values options sequence, forming trajectory through abstract two-dimensional space. During task, entorhinal cortex exhibited grid-like representation with orientation aligned to axis space most informative choices. A network brain regions, including ventromedial prefrontal cortex, tracked difference options. These findings suggest grid supports by representing map, which might be used generate lower-dimensional signals guide

Efficient planning is a distinctive hallmark of intelligence in humans, who routinely make rapid inferences over complex world contexts. However, studies investigating how humans accomplish this tend to focus on naive participants engaged simplistic tasks with small state spaces, which do not reflect the intricacy, ecological validity, and human specialization real-world planning. In study, we examine street-by-street route London taxi drivers navigating across more than 26,000 streets (United Kingdom). We explore unfolded dynamically different phases journey construction identify theoretic principles by these expert planners rationally precache decisions at prioritized environment states an early phase process. particular, find that measures path complexity predict mental sampling prioritization dynamics independent alternative derived from real spatial context being navigated. Our data provide evidence for complexity-driven remote access within internal models precaching during very large structured spaces.

The ventral hippocampus (vHPC) has long been thought of as the "emotional" hippocampus. Over past several years, complexity vHPC come to light, highlighting diversity cell types, inputs, and outputs that coordinate a constellation positively negatively motivated behaviors. Here, we review recent work on how vCA1 contributes network associates external stimuli with internal motivational drive states promote selection adaptive behavioral responses. We propose model function emphasizes its role in integration transformation cues guide when faced multiple potential outcomes.

When faced with navigating back somewhere we have been before might either retrace our steps or seek a shorter path. Both choices costs. Here, ask whether it is possible to characterize formally the choice of navigational plans as bounded rational process that trades off quality plan (e.g., its length) and cognitive cost required find implement it. We analyze navigation strategies two groups people are firstly trained follow "default policy" taking route in virtual maze then asked navigate various known goal destinations, way they want ("Go To Goal") by novel shortcuts ("Take Shortcut"). address these wayfinding problems using InfoRL: an information-theoretic approach formalizes devising plan, informational deviate from well-learned (the policy"). In InfoRL, optimality refers finding best trade-off between length amount control information report five main findings. First, automatically identified InfoRL correspond closely different routes (optimal suboptimal) reality map, which were annotated hand previous research. Second, deliberate more places where value investing resources (i.e., relevant information) greater. Third, compared group who receive "Go Goal" instruction, those "Take Shortcut" instruction but less optimal solutions, reflecting intrinsic difficulty shortcuts. Fourth, modulate flexibly their resources, depending on benefits shortcut. Finally, found surprising variability resource investment across participants. Taken together, results illustrate planning perspective.

Efficient navigation is supported by a cognitive map of space. The hippocampus plays key role for this linking multimodal sensory information with spatial memory representations. However, in human studies, the full range often unavailable due to stationarity experimental setups. Abstract The dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is a key brain region for the expression of spatial memories, such as navigating towards learned reward location. nucleus accumbens (NAc) prominent projection target dHPC and implicated in value-based action selection. Yet, contents dHPC→NAc information stream their acute role behavior remain largely unknown. Here, we found that optogenetic stimulation pathway while mice navigated location was both necessary sufficient memory-related appetitive behaviors. To understand task-relevant coding properties individual NAc-projecting hippocampal neurons (dHPC →NAc ), used vivo dual-color two-photon imaging. In contrast to other neurons, subpopulation contained more place cells, with enriched tuning properties. This also showed enhanced non-spatial behaviors deceleration licking. A generalized linear model revealed conjunctive which improved identification zone. We propose routes specific reward-related behavioral state guide NAc
