Restoration supports the recovery of ecological attributes such as cover, complexity, and diversity to slow areal decline natural ecosystems. activity is intensifying worldwide combat persistent stressors that are driving global declines extent resilience coral reefs. However, restoration disputed a meaningful aid reef recovery, often an expensive distraction addressing root causes loss. We contend this dispute partly stems from inferences drawn small-scale experimental outcomes amplified by misconceptions around cost-based reasoning. Alongside aggressive emissions reductions, we advocate urgent investment in ecosystem part management toolbox destruction reefs know them within decades.

Abstract Function-based studies have opened a new chapter in our understanding of coral reefs. Unfortunately, we are opening this as the world’s reefs rapidly transform. In context, one most important roles function-based is to inform reef conservation. At critical juncture, chance reflect on where come from, and going, functional ecology, with specific consideration what means for approaches conserving As focal examples, examine role corals reefs, practice culling crown-of-thorns starfish, from perspective. We also consider how papers special issue build current understanding. Ultimately, highlight robust scientific investigation, based an ecosystem functions, will be key helping us navigate through crisis.

Coral carbonate production is fundamental to reef accretion and, consequently, the preservation of essential ecosystem services, such as wave attenuation and sustained biodiversity. However, unprecedented loss coral reefs from anthropogenic impacts has put these valuable services at risk. To counteract this loss, active rehabilitation degraded sites accelerated globally. A variety restoration practices exist, tailored local site needs types. For where there a significant unconsolidated substrate, Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System (MARRS, or “Reef Stars”) been utilised contribute toward rubble stabilisation accretion. effect Stars on budgets structural complexity not assessed. that purpose, we assess cover through census-based approach identify contribution producers eroders alongside studying skeletal properties estimate current rehabilitated compared natural unrehabilitated patches mid-Great Barrier Reef.
