Abstract The accumulation of plastic litter in marine environments is a major environmental challenge along with the difficulties their measurement because massive size oceans and vast circulation litter, which being addressed as part United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Citizen science, public participation scientific research knowledge production, represents potential source data for SDG monitoring reporting yet there has been no evidence its use to date. Here, we show how Ghana become first country integrate existing citizen science on official indicator 14.1.1b years 2016–2020, also helped bridge local collection efforts global processes policy agendas by leveraging framework. results have used Ghana’s 2022 Voluntary National Review SDGs, reported UN Global Database, well helping inform relevant policies Ghana. In addition, here, present pathway that can be adopted government authorities other countries an interest following similar validation process this potentially others.

Public engagement in marine litter research is increasing. Further advancing this approach requires a critical examination of the benefits citizen science and primary challenges that we must overcome. A thematic analysis survey responses from 56 professionals (scientists project organisers) who use to investigate revealed nine significant alongside ten key challenges. Benefits were identified for scientists (e.g., learning something new), reducing data collection costs), environment less plastic waste environment). Challenges fell within three categories related to: 1) involving citizens engaging, training, retaining scientists), 2) conducting effective raising credibility science), 3) bridging gap between pragmatic safety concerns). Reflecting on these findings broader literature, five recommendations are provided advance practice research: acknowledging strengths weaknesses approach; strengthening collaboration harmonisation different projects; increasing awareness value 4) listening supporting better; 5) securing sustainable funding work. By incorporating recommendations, actors organise projects, decision makers, agencies) will be better able projects generate robust can shared globally assist assessment management litter.

We present the first report of plastic biomedia contamination on Brazilian beaches based evidence collected from 14 Paraná state coastline (southern Brazil). Plastic biomedia, also called biocarriers, are small, perforated pieces used worldwide in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) that apply Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) process. Accidental release these particles into environment adds to Ocean's long-term pollution problem. A high amount presence coastal areas was noticed by a community member, who found 411 beach located Pontal do Paraná, bringing this issue our attention. In study, retrieved drift line alongshore transects (0.3 1 km long) and cross-shore (5 m wide) water backshore zone. total 749 items were 11 sampled beaches, including Mel Superagui Islands nature reserves. The decreasing trend abundance with increase distance PEC southern outlet suggests probably originate WWTP Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC). Once water, floating followed suspended sediment transport pattern exported waters transported longshore currents. Highlighting potential role as substantial vector for marine debris coastline. most likely source novel contaminant MBBR systems. Therefore, stakeholders need discuss establish reporting system so spillovers or losses reported, its dispersal is reduced.

Abstract The ongoing international negotiations on a global plastics treaty will have pivotal implications for future efforts to transform the plastic economy. This is essential since current use of in economy impacts environment beyond planetary carrying capacity. To ensure that forthcoming Treaty can provide foundation this transition, best available science must be made negotiations, but with no formal scientific mechanism inform process, not ensured. Scientists’ Coalition an Effective Plastic serves as example how community has self-organized and come together address task, working five different categories science-policy communication. Coalition’s work transparent here hope it inspire organization input into other policy areas.

Abstract Epoxy resins, by showing outstanding performances, stand out as the most applied materials in thermoset products. However, their excellent properties, associated with covalently cross‐linked structures, come at expense of recyclability, thus posing environmental and regulatory challenges. Herein, starting from recently explored reversibility robust poly(β‐amino amide)s, dynamic curing agents are synthesized a one‐pot procedure for use preparation epoxy‐derived networks. The obtained retain desirable properties while being fully (re)processable, high temperature‐dependent viscoelasticity (activation energy (E ) ≈230 to 270 kJ mol −1 ). Moreover, this new generation epoxy shows resistance hydrolysis creep elevated temperatures (up 120 °C). As an entry point further applications, reversible implemented adhesive formulations, showcasing lap shear strengths that comparable commercial hardeners 9 MPa). β‐amino amide groups provide adhesives additional functionality heat‐triggered deconstruction (130 150 °C), re‐bonding capacity up 80% recovery lap‐shear strength. To encourage industrial adoption, cost‐effective, drop‐in synthesis protocol is developed using only bulk chemicals, hence facilitating practical implementation.
