Currently, optical fibers play a leading role in telecommunications, serve as special transmission components for industrial applications, and form the basis of highly sensitive sensor elements. One most commonly used modifications is reduction initial dimensions cladding core to few or several micrometers, allowing evanescent wave emerging from tapered region interact with surrounding environment. As result, microfiber formed this way any changes its surroundings, making it an ideal sensing element. This article primarily focuses on reviewing latest trends science involving various types microfibers, including tapers, rings, loops, coils, fiber Bragg gratings. Additionally, discusses materials coating optic elements—such metals, oxides, polymers, organic materials, graphene—which enhance sensitivity specific physical factors enable selectivity developed sensors.
