To quantify the annual direct healthcare cost of intentional overdose and other types self-harm resulting in emergency department (ED) and/or inpatient encounters among youth United States (U.S.). Using 2021 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) National Inpatient (NIS) datasets, produced by Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ) Cost Utilization Project (HCUP), we determined nationally representative cross-sectional frequencies costs specific 8- to 21-year-old pediatric young adult patients. The total combined one-year all was $869 million (95% CI $841M-$897M). majority this due overdose-related encounters, which totaled $530 $512M-$547M). Of total, $232 $223M-$241M) paid public insurers $296 $281M-$312M) private insurers. Encounters females accounted 79% ($420 million, 95% $404M-$435M). Based on data, preventing could save U.S. health system up annually. As collectively work prevent suicide deaths people, it is important recognize needs larger group who are engaging serious non-fatal suicidal acts, whom females. Prevention population should be a priority, both terms upstream efforts promotion evidence-based methods safer storage.
