Abstract The South China mainland and nearby islands are biodiversity hotspots. Section Nintooa , widely distributed across China, Vietnam, Hainan Island, exhibits a typical disjunct distribution pattern. However, the origins of flora Island phylogenetic relationships within remain contentious. In this study, we collected 81 samples encompassing all recognized species along with from other sections Lonicera . We reconstructed using 491 orthologous nuclear genes complete plastomes generated by target enrichment genome skimming sequencing. Our gene-based concatenated trees support monophyly tree indicates that Vietnamese populations form sister clades. plastome results indicate is polyphyletic, subsection Volubilis forming monophyletic group Calcaratae clade members subgenus Chamaecerasus hybridization network analysis reveals extensive gene flow whereas shows no leaving origin unclear. exhibit unstable positions underwent rapid radiation during Miocene.
