This paper presents a case study regarding the hard turning of tool steel specimens when some insidious surface patterns were observed beyond usual parallel feed marks. An optical three-dimensional measuring device was used to characterize and compare common reference surfaces textured profiles. Subsequently, these data analyzed using an image processing computational tool, through which it possible infer that, indeed, with unusual appearance exhibited very well-defined orientation texture. The vibration monitoring during process samples then compared spectral density analysis signal, from dominant frequency in range 3100 3300 Hz for both, but considerably higher amplitude peak one, indicating unstable cut, i.e., one subjected excessive vibrations. Finally, experimental modal performed on identified fundamental same order magnitude, allows establishing potentially causal correlation between occurrence chatter obtaining surface. technique may be pleasant opportunity improve tribology performance tools, as potential textures are well presented recent studies.
