The extended immersion of ships in seawater frequently results biofouling, a condition characterized by the accumulation marine organisms such as barnacles and algae. To combat this issue, application anti-fouling coatings to hull surfaces vessels has emerged one most effective strategies. In response increasing global emphasis on environmental sustainability, there is growing demand for that not only demonstrate superior efficacy but also adhere stringent standards. traditional use organotin-based self-polishing coatings, known their high toxicity, been prohibited due concerns. Consequently, progressive shift toward development environmentally friendly coatings. This paper reviews toxicity limitations associated with conventional It provides comprehensive overview recent advancements field, including novel low surface energy biomimetic nanostructured each leveraging distinct mechanisms. evaluates composition performance these emerging identifies key technical challenges remain unresolved. proposes multi-faceted approach addressing challenges, suggesting potential solutions enhancing effectiveness compatibility technologies. forecasts future research directions trajectories emphasizing need continued innovation achieve both sustainability performance.

ABSTRACT Biological fouling will cause severe damage to the functionality of marine underwater facilities, shorten their service life, impede normal operation, and trigger a biological invasion event. The traditional antifouling coatings release heavy metal elements, which harm environment. To overcome this issue, self‐polishing resin based on vanillin methacrylate (VMA) was prepared via free radical polymerization method. In seawater, VMA‐based achieve through hydrolysis phenolic ester group. mechanism VMA calculated using density functional theory by Cp2k software, results show that achieves one‐step S N 2 mechanism. It exhibited antibacterial environmentally friendly properties releasing vanillin, is natural active substance. antibacterial, diatom adhesion inhibition, 9‐month field test demonstrated excellent performance coatings. provides novel concept for has promising application prospect.
